Exhibition Announcement Agora Gallery is proud to present Danish artists Magda Hogh in Five Degrees of Abstraction and Rahbek in Unbound Perspectives. Exhibition Dates: October 24, 2008 through November 13, 2008 Opening Reception: Thursday, November 6, 2008, 6-8pm Gallery Location: 530 West 25th Street, Chelsea, New York Gallery Hours: Tues - Sat, 11am-6pm Magda Hogh: http://www.agora-gallery.com/ArtistInvite/Magda_Hogh.aspx A deeply felt preoccupation with Scandinavian horizons and the dramatic juxtapositions they offer is a major subject of Magda Hogh's quietly powerful, contemplative abstract paintings. She has taken in the stunning confluence of sky, water, light and landscape of her home country, yet does not present us with naturalistic scenery; she makes no overt attempt at mimesis. Instead, we are offered a map of nature as holistic entity, equal parts outer and inner landscape. Fragmented and straight-edged slashes of icy white and melancholy blue lie stacked together as if the refracted winter light had turned into solid bars tumbling about on the frozen sea. Her aesthetic choice of abstraction gives these forms both the spontaneity of nature and the highly thoughtful, restrained feel that accompanies the best of contemporary abstract art. There is confident authority, as well as deep sensitivity, in the studied composition of Magda Hogh's work. She reaches for, and expresses, a topographical as well as a psychological resonance. Rahbek: http://www.agora-gallery.com/ArtistInvite/Rahbek.aspx Rahbek combines the politicized energy of street art with a photorealistic attenuation to volume and detail. His paintings balance painterly expression with careful control, inviting dialogue about the constant tension between freedom and repression that dictates political and personal life. Influenced by a wide spectrum of world affairs-from terror to poverty to religion-Rahbek uses his paintings to honestly react to events that catch his interest. He relies on typography, animated mark making, and cultural imagery to open up a conversation with viewers. Ultimately, art is a mode of entertainment for Rahbek, a way to engage an audience and communicate clear, open-ended messages about contemporary culture. He continually experiments with techniques, reshaping his art practice in response to the world around him. Rahbek relishes the opportunity to promote change through art and recently donated a painting to "A Race against Breast Cancer." Trained as an art director, he runs an independent advertising agency while pursuing his painting career. He has traveled extensively and currently lives and works in Slangerup, Denmark. |
